Rethink “Even Big Girls Need Love Too”

January 4, 2014 by Doug Leave a Comment

I’ve heard the titular phrase a lot in my life. Given the wisdom of age, I recognize at least two or three “big girls” from my past who I discounted as potential romantic partners because of the issues addressed by Rachel C Wiley in this powerful, beautiful spoken word piece. Clearly, my loss.

Regardless of our chosen media, we as storytellers have a responsibility to represent the entire human condition, not just those those elements, warped as they are, which sell magazine covers. Filmmaker, photographer or writer, find a place for everyone in your work.

Waifish beauty is an ideal, not the norm. Speak about and to real people.
